LIQUID STRIPES IN HARMONY

William Ward and Mona Kolesar

June 20, 2023 to December 31, 2023

Location: Judson Manor, 1890 E 107th St, Cleveland, OH 44106

Exhibition curated by AAWR Registrar Kelly Pontoni.

Kandinsky said, “Color is a power which directly influences the soul.” These works by William Ward and Mona Kolesar created that power for me while curating this exhibition. Color and movement are the key to both artists’ compositions. William Ward described it the best, “liquid stripes”. The work presented here revels in movement, color variation and saturation. The gentle transition of the lines throughout the canvas is smooth and relaxed. During William Wards’ life he spent a decade at the Cleveland Museum of Art and was a professor at The Cleveland Institute of Art. Painter, photographer, filmmaker, designer and teacher, Ward also taught the art of calligraphy. Ward states, “calligraphy builds discipline in a person. If you make a mistake, you start over.”  The influence from his discipline of calligraphy is demonstrated by the effortless transition from line to line in these paintings.

Mona Kolesar’s work has similar curves and flow, however her bright saturated color pallet conveys a sharper experience. Kolesar says on her website, “Combining materials is visual music to me.” This is demonstrated in some of the titles of the work, where she uses musical references. Even though the two artists have very different styles and techniques, the exhibition displays a movement and harmony that balances out beautifully. Mona Kolesar was archived in 2022, and we have 26 of her works in the Artists Archives collection.

Mona Kolesar became an Archived Artist in 2022. A sampling of her mixed media reliefs are
currently on display as part of The Liquid Harmony Exhibition, alongside the abstract paintings
of fellow Archived Artist William Ward. Kolesar’s sculptures have similar curves and flow,
however her bright saturated color pallet conveys a sharper experience. Kolesar says on her
website, “Combining materials is visual music to me.” This is demonstrated in some of the titles
of the work, where she uses musical references. Even though the two artists have very different
styles and techniques, the exhibition displays a movement and harmony that balances out
beautifully. Mona Kolesar was archived in 2022, and we have 26 of her works in the Artists
Archives collection.

Patty Flauto is a contemporary abstract painter living in Rocky River, Ohio. Creativity runs
through her work and her life with an unending passion for color and design. Using the canvas
as a window rather than an overt narrative, the strong compositions, colors, and shapes in her
work invite the viewer to pause and interpret. Impression overshadows realism, creating a
dialogue between artist and viewer. Layers of meaning allow for thought, escape, and a sense
of satisfaction. Abstraction supports a unique and personal mental meandering as a shift between “real life”
and “imagined life”. Imagination provides personal, private moments that can inspire
improvisational emotion.
